Nowadays, every individual dreams of migrating to Europe countries, especially the UK, for academic purposes, skill migration, tourist or visiting purposes, getting PR(permanent residence) or citizenship, and so on. Even though there are many reasons to enter the UK, a limited number of persons still enter the UK. Because the UK allocates a limited number of UK visa categories to enter their country.

Types of UK student visa and requirements

There are three types of student visas available for individuals looking to study in the UK
  • student visas for adults
  • child student visa
  • short term study visa

Student visa for adults

To apply for a UK student visa, you must be at least 18 years old and meet certain eligibility requirements. If you meet these criteria, you can submit your application for a student visa to study in the UK.

To apply for a UK student visa, you must first receive an unconditional offer of acceptance from a licensed student sponsor, such as a college or university. You can check if your chosen institution is licensed to offer student sponsorship by visiting the UK government's official website. Once you have been accepted to a course, the college or university will provide you with a CAS (confirmation of acceptance for studies). It is important to note that you must submit your application for a UK student visa within 6 months of receiving your CAS. This requirement is determined by the specific course and your eligibility as determined by the sponsoring institution.

Financial requirements and dependents 

The UK student visa financial requirement is a crucial factor in the visa application process. As an applicant, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover the costs of your course and living expenses while studying in the UK. The amount required will vary depending on your specific course and institution, as well as any dependents you may be bringing with you. To meet the financial requirement, you must have the funds available in your own account to pay for one academic year, of course, fees (up to 9 months). This amount will be specified in your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter. In addition to course fees, you must also have enough funds to support yourself while living in the UK. The exact amount will depend on your location of study.
  • For courses in the London area, the cost is £1334 per month for a person, with a total cost of approximately £12000 for a 9-month course.
  • For courses outside of London, the cost is £1023 per month for a person, with a total cost of approximately £9200 for a 9-month course.

Further. this amount will increase per each family member you bring with you. When you apply with your partner and children (dependents), you must be a full-time student on a postgraduate level course for at least nine months or longer, and your partner maybe
  • your husband or wife or civil partner
  • your unmarried partner
  • your child under 18 years old  

To prove that you are a parent, you must provide a birth certificate, civil partnership certificate, marriage certificate, or civil partnership certificate, and your UK student visa. Further, your partner and child must each have a certain amount to support themselves in the UK along with the principal student visa applicant. They are
  • £ 845 per month (up to 9 months) in London
  • £ 680 per month (up to 9 months ) outside London 

If you are applying for a UK student visa along with your partner or child, you will need to show that you have enough funds to support yourselves as well as the dependents rate for your partner or child. This means that you will need to have the required amount of money in your personal account for at least 28 consecutive days before you can apply for the visa. Once you have held this amount in your account for 28 days, you will need to provide a bank statement and a balance confirmation letter as part of your visa application.

English language requirements

To apply for a student visa to the United Kingdom, it is essential to demonstrate a sufficient level of English language proficiency. Most universities in the UK expect students to have the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to a certain level.

One way to demonstrate English language proficiency is through the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test. The IELTS test is divided into four modules: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and it is used to assess a student's English language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

For students who are applying for a degree or higher-level course, a CEFR level B2 (equivalent to an IELTS band score of 5.5 to 6.5) is typically required. For students who are applying for a course below degree level, a CEFR level B1 (equivalent to an IELTS band score of 4.5 to 5.5) is usually required.

It is worth noting that some universities may waive the English language requirement for students who have already completed a UK diploma or degree, or for students who have studied in an English-medium institution. However, this is not always the case, and it is best to check with the specific university to determine their requirements.

When can you apply and travel to the UK?

You can apply for a UK student visa up to six months before the start of your course. The usual processing time for a student visa is three weeks, although this may vary during peak intake periods such as September. The application fee for a student visa is £363, and if you need to extend your visa from within the UK, the fee is £490 per person for any dependents. In addition to these fees, you will also need to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your student visa application. The amount of the healthcare surcharge will depend on the number of dependents and the length of your course. Please note that you are not allowed to enter the UK before the start date on your visa, regardless of when your course begins.
